Postpartum Doula
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF
Hello lovelies! My name is Karlie, and Iβm a doula, military wife to my high school sweetheart, and mama to our feral toddler. Iβm originally from the Austin area, and have been calling San Antonio home since 2021. Iβm a big animal lover and outdoorsy kind of gal! When Iβm not working or caring for kiddos or pets, youβll probably find me sewing a last minute project, iced coffee in hand.
HOW DID YOU COME TO DOULA WORK?
Growing up as the eldest daughter of 7, birth and babies felt like a regular part of my life. But being an older sister and being a mother are not as similar as I had imagined, and when I was pregnant with my son, I found myself absorbing as much information about birth as I possibly could to prepare myself. My birth went in an entirely different direction than how I had planned, and after an emergency cesarean and no family nearby, I felt completely overwhelmed and unprepared for postpartum. Thatβs why I became a postpartum doula! I believe that the weeks and months following birth are sacred, and all mothers deserve support and community during this precious time!
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST OR FIND MOST REWARDING ABOUT DOULA WORK?
So many things!! I love the feeling I get when I am able to do the good that I want to see in the world. I love preparing meals for brand new families. I love listening to birth stories. I love to hear the breastfeeding wins (yay! She latched on the first try this time) and hold space for challenges (he has reflux, what do I do next?).
what are your specialties or areas of particular passion?
I am specifically an overnight care doula, because rest is sometimes the best medicine for mamas and the hardest thing to get! I am a huge supporter of mothers making educated choices for themselves and their families, and I do my best to reflect that in my doula work.
βThe most powerful motherhood role models are women who show you how to heal, not how to hide.β
