TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF

Hi everyone! I’m Megan, and I lead Rooted Birth. I have been a doula and childbirth educator in the San Antonio area since 2017. I am also an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. I have a husband, 3 kids, one cat (who we named Albus Dumbledore because of his white beard), and an Aussiedoodle named Zoey. If I’m not working or hanging out with my family, you’ll find me listening to podcasts and audiobooks, reading, watching reality TV, baking gluten-free goodies, or playing mahjong with friends!

HOW DID YOU COME TO DOULA WORK?

I was one of the first of my friends to get pregnant, so naturally I had lots of questions! I began researching pregnancy, labor, birth, and newborn care and just became fascinated with how many options there were. Even just considering pregnancy, there was so much conflicting information about what was safe and what wasn’t. I learned that I loved talking about these subjects with anyone who would listen! All of my births were drastically different from one another, and I knew I wanted to be part of supporting families as they navigated these huge life changes.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST OR FIND MOST REWARDING ABOUT DOULA WORK?

So many things! Besides seeing all the squishy babies, I love checking in with clients in the weeks after their baby is born to see how they’re doing. It’s always this beautiful mix of exhaustion, spit-up, and doubt, mixed with love, wonderment, and pride. All of these things are so formative to who we are as parents and it is such a special privilege to be able to witness that.

what are your specialties or areas of particular passion?

I spend most of my time these days with postpartum families who are navigating the ups and downs of infant feeding. Your birth and early postpartum have a profound impact on breastfeeding, and I love educating parents during pregnancy so they can feel prepared for breastfeeding from the very start!

“to be pregnant— is to have your entire world living inside you. to have a child in your arms — is to have your entire heart living outside of your chest. to be a mother — is without question, the most amazingly terrifying ride of your life.”
